Designing safe and comfortable neighborhoods

. The relevance of the article is based on a fundamental human need which is called safety. In a city, there are different levels of criminal spaces: from particular rooms to housing communities. Increasing demand for a comfortable built environment requires a new approach to the safety of housing and facilities. The urban environment should meet these changes to answer the new security standards. The scope of the study includes architectural means that create a safe built environment.
The article reports the main problems related to the protection of urban spaces against crime. It takes into consideration a feel of safety and threats related to the large neighborhoods and their public spaces.
It takes into consideration three basic issues:
• lack of image
• lack of diversity
• safety, real and perceived.
Author offers some strategies to create safe environment in such spaces. Firstly, the neighborhood should have a discernable center and an edge to define a social identity. Then, there should be certain prominent sites reserved for civic buildings and a variety of dwelling
types within the neighborhood.
We should establish clear border definition of controlled space, create clearly marked transitional zones for vehicles and relocate large gathering areas to provide good surveillance and access control. Then we should place safe activities in unsafe locations in order to attract legitimate users and increase normal activity, and place unsafe activities in safe locations with good visual surveillance, well controlled, in order to protect them.
