TENEMENTS IN BERLIN AND MOSCOW: HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT
The article is devoted to the history of the development of XIX - early XX
century tenements in Berlin and Moscow. The authors consider and analyze the features of their
planning, spatial, architectural and artistic solutions. Types of tenement in Berlin (1. Mietshaus,
2. Mietskasernen, 3. city villas, 4. Miethaus in Kurfürstendamm for rich public) and Moscow (1.
the richhouses, where it was supposed to create maximum comfort, 2. houses of the “medium
hand” 3. cheap houses for the low-income public with the minimum size of rooms in nonprestigious
places of the city; 4. houses of free apartments for the poor) are considered. The
individual city formation’s particularity allows to reveal architectural and social differences in
the development of Berlin and Moscow houses of these types.
