The most actual problem nowadays is the problem of perception of the city,
not only in its presentation of the everyday structure, but also through other ways of representing
the city as a concept in culture and, in particular, in painting. Architecture and painting are
in creative dialogue. The city in two-dimensional painting, exactly its structure, is perceived
speculatively through the volume. As there is always a three-dimensional natural or fictional
urban structure in front of the artist before he creates a flat image on the canvas of the picture. In
the theater the artist uses the same technology forming city structure inside the stage. He interprets
different-scale urban spaces, models them in different conventional three-dimensional images.
In architecture, the design process is arranged like in art, thus it is possible to prove the
connection and common perception of the city in painting and architecture. In VKhUTEMAS
students were offered special exercises (the discipline "Volume") before drawing the project on
paper. Exercise involves the creation of a model (sculpture) with the help of which it was possible
to convey the three-dimensional solution, which was subsequently translated into drawings.
This technology helps to identify and analyze the morphology of the city in painting and
projects, illustrates how and why painting can be perceived in three-dimensional presentation
