VERTICAL GARDENING AS AN ELEMENT OF LANDSCAPE DESIGN
Vertical gardening allows creating the greatest decorative effect in smaller areas and making urban space more diverse and naturally accentuated. The functions of vertical gardening are numerous: creating colorful accents and boundaries; controlling the traffic direction in the territory; decorating unsightly buildings (commercial and technical structures, etc.). This decorative effect is created not only by the plants themselves during the vegetation season, but also by the texture of woody vine stalks and by vertical plant frames. The following methods of vertical gardening are the most relevant to coastal cities in the South of Primorsky region including Vladivostok: vertical building walls and retaining walls design; slopes and rocky slopes decoration; the landscaping of special small architectural forms, such as arches, arbors, pergolas, trellis, etc.; using hanging containers. Vertical gardening techniques involve a great assortment of ornamental plants, the use of which is determined by microclimatic conditions in the planting area as well as by the objectives and functionality of the plantings being established. Vines are the most promising group for vertical gardening in the South of the Russian Far East. The study presents a wide range of plants for vertical gardening in the South of the Russian Far East.
